Reading Station
15-20 minutes walk away
Description
Furnished double bedroom (about 3.0 m by 4.0 m) in a fairly large semi-detached Victorian house, 20 min walk from Reading town centre, bus-stops to town very nearby, 10 min walk to the university campus. There is a shared kitchen, dining room, two sitting rooms, bathroom with WC, shower room with WC, and a garden with lockable bike storage in the outhouse. Although the house is 150 years old, it has EPC C (almost B) because I (the resident landlord) have spent a lot of effort and money on making it more energy-efficient. There is no off-road parking but it is possible to get a resident's parking permit from the Borough Council.
The rent includes all bills, Council tax and unlimited internet (WiFi or ethernet over mains). There is no deposit but I would like to see a reference from employer, and there is an agreement to sign about what we expect of each other for satisfactory house-sharing. The house has four bedrooms altogether (including mine). I currently have one housemate, who moved in two years ago when he started working in Reading. Three full-time residents is a comfortable number for a small community in this house. The fourth bedroom is smaller and useful as a guestroom.
I have housemates because I don't like living alone. I don't expect company all the time, but company is the purpose of sharing the house. Therefore I look for housemates who want to live here full-time (rather than being somewhere else for part of the week regularly, for instance) and are around at weekends more often than not. Obviously most people go away sometimes for work or holidays - I do myself - but a frequently absent person would be a disappointing housemate for me.
I have plenty of things to keep me occupied (reading, running, climbing, etc. as listed opposite, as well as working), but I like there to be friendly people somewhere in the house, with company and conversation sometimes. I get on much better with people in small numbers, for good conversation, and friends are important to me. I'm enthusiastic about thinking (which is maybe my favourite occupation), so I'm happy to talk about many subjects, provided they're thought-provoking. Being 61, I'm used to having housemates who are younger than me, some of whom have become long-term friends.
Please get in touch if you might like to share the house. Since common interests and compatible behaviours are important, please could you say something about yourself and your interests.
