Bristol Centre Penthouse Bedroom with Bathroom

Top-floor room in the old Granary on Welsh Back, the 1869 grain store that spent twenty years as Bristol’s most famous rock venue before anyone lived in it. With a kitten called Miso and live-in work from home Housemate called Zenny. It is a two bedroom duplex penthouse flat.

The flat runs under the original roof timbers: double-height living room, exposed stone gable, kitchen tucked into the eaves, roll-top bath. Your room is a proper double with a wardrobe and its own window onto the rooftops. King Street is 1 minutes down the steps, Queen Square 1 minute, Temple Meads about 10, Bristol Harbourside about 5 minutes. Comes with 1.6Gbps fast wifi, desk space.

The space

The flat occupies the top of the building, which you access with a Lift. The living room is the centre of it: a full cathedral roof of 19th-century oak trusses, a raw stone and brick gable wall, two leather sofas, a mezzanine above with a glass balustrade. Light comes from skylights on both pitches, so it changes completely through the day.
The kitchen sits under the roof slope at the far end with a hob, oven, extractor, dishwasher and a big skylight over the sink that opens onto the rooftops. There’s a dining table for four and a desk with a monitor if you need to work.
Your bedroom is off the hallway. Double bed, wardrobe, shelving, bedside table and lamps, exposed beams overhead and a deep-set window. It’s a medium room by footprint but the ceiling goes up a long way, which is the trick of the whole building.
The bathroom is your own-outside the room: freestanding roll-top bath with a rainfall shower over it, WC and basin.

Guest access

You have your own lockable bedroom and full run of the flat: living room, kitchen, dining table, desk, bathroom, hallway storage. Kitchen cupboard and fridge shelf are yours. Bed linen and towels provided, washing machine in the flat.
I’ll be away for the whole stay, so you’re sharing only with my flatmate, he produces music with clients at home, and my kitten Miso. Building entry is by intercom and key.

Other things to note

This is a listed Victorian warehouse, so it comes with the character and the caveats. There are stairs to the top floor and has a lift to the flat itself.
Ceilings are steep at the edges of the kitchen and bathroom where the roof comes down. Under the skylights it gets bright early in summer and warm in the afternoon; blinds are fitted in the bedroom.
Welsh Back and King Street get lively on Friday and Saturday nights. It’s much quieter than the street, but it isn’t a silent flat. Bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.
Remember there is a kitten, if you have allergies.

Where you’ll be (neighbourhood)

Welsh Back is the old quayside on the Floating Harbour, and the flat sits at the heart of the medieval city rather than at the edge of it. Everything below is walkable in minutes.
King Street is around the corner: the Llandoger Trow from 1664, the Old Duke playing jazz seven nights a week, Small Bar, Bristol Old Vic. Queen Square is a one-minute walk, a full Georgian square you cut across on the way to anywhere. St Nicholas Market with its stalls and lunch counters is five minutes north. Castle Park is the other side of Bristol Bridge for green space and the ruined church.
Follow the water west and you reach Arnolfini, M Shed, and Wapping Wharf with the cargo container food yards. Up the hill north is Stokes Croft and the Bearpit for the murals, record shops and late bars. Clifton and the Suspension Bridge are a half-hour walk along the harbour or ten minutes by bus.
The ground floor of our own building is a restaurant and cocktail club, with the original venue cellar underneath it.

Getting around

Central Bristol is best walked and this is about as central as it gets. Temple Meads station is 10 minutes on foot along the harbour, or one stop on the bus from Baldwin Street. DOTT Scooters and e-bikes right on Kings Street.
The harbour ferry picks up at Welsh Back, right outside, and runs to Wapping Wharf, Hotwells and Temple Meads. It’s the nicest way to move around the city and cheap.
Buses to Clifton, Gloucester Road and Stokes Croft leave from Baldwin Street and the Centre, both under five minutes away. The A1 Airport Flyer runs from Temple Meads and the Centre to Bristol Airport in about 30 minutes.
There is no parking with the flat and the surrounding streets are permit-controlled. Nearest car parks are Queen Charlotte Street and Queen Square. You genuinely won’t need a car. Plenty of secure cycle parking around the harbour.

I’ve lived in Bristol for years and in this building for the last of them. I run a creative membership organisation here and put on events across the city, so most of what I know about Bristol is where the good stuff actually happens rather than what the guidebooks say.
