Description
One double room remaining in a bright mid-century three-bedroom house in Chesterton. Ideally, you are a PhD student or post-doc, but we might consider a master’s student or professional if you are a good fit.
Room 1: Double room at the back of the house – £625/month
Available from 1 July
***TAKEN***
Room 2: Spacious double room at the front – £660/month
Available from 1 July
***TAKEN***
We’re looking for someone who can commit to staying until summer 2027 (even though the tenancy is now rolling). The contract will have our three names on it. We will rent the whole house (‘buddy up’), not individual rooms. Total rent is paid monthly. Deposit required.
Bills are not included in the rent and are split equally. Electricity, gas, water and broadband come to approx. £75 each a month. No council tax (band D) if we're all students. If you’re not a student, you would pay a fair share of the council tax.
The House
The kitchen has an oven and gas hob, a microwave, a large fridge, lots of cupboards, and a washing machine. No dryer (but several clotheshorses live in the living room) or dishwasher.
The living room is generously sized, with a dining table, sofa, desk and storage options. It looks onto a small gravel garden.
The bathroom has a bath, with a detachable shower head (good water pressure), and sink. The toilet is separate.
Bikes can be locked out the front or stored in the garden or shed. The driveway can be used for parking.
Overall, the house is comfortable and well conceived. Previous tenants have stayed for a long time. It stays warm in the winter and doesn't get too hot in the summer.
The landlord is responsive and easy to deal with. She is also a former Cambridge student.
The Area
The house is in a great location, on a calm road with no thoroughfare: three minutes on foot to the Cam and Jesus Green; fifteen minutes to most colleges and the city centre; buses and cycle routes nearby.
Chesterton is a lovely part of the city, slightly removed from the university bubble, with many families but still some students. It has decent pubs, bars and music venues. There are two Co-ops almost next door, plus bigger supermarkets in the vicinity.
Housemates
I'm a PhD student who has lived here for the past year. Another PhD student is moving in. My current housemates are a post-doc and a PhD student now leaving Cambridge.
We’re looking for one more new housemate who
- has PhD funding or a salary (landlord’s request).
- can commit to staying more or less until next summer – stability is important.
- is calm, tidy and cool.
- generally doesn't work from home, but every so often is fine – we can take turns.
- doesn't smoke indoors.
I would like the house to remain peaceful as I finish my thesis. The vibe is friendly, but not excessively so. We could envisage the occasional pub trip, walk or soirée.
We’re happy for partners, lovers, friends or family to stay over occasionally, but no pets, sorry.
Cleaning duties would be shared. ‘Clean as you go’ generally works well, but we can have an informal rota for hoovering, bathrooms, bins etc.
If you're interested, tell me a bit about yourself, and we can arrange a viewing sharpish.
Preference will be given to in-person viewings. To avoid disappointment, please read the ad carefully.
