Description
A double bedroom with a front garden view is becoming available to rent in a spacious 2-bedroom bungalow in the quiet village of Bere Ferrers. We are a couple currently living in the larger bedroom, and the second bedroom (also a double, slightly smaller) will be available from mid-April.
Rent & Costs
The total monthly cost of running the house for 3 people is around £1,400, including £875 rent, plus gas, electricity, water, fibre broadband, and council tax (band D). Split between 3 tenants, this comes to approximately £450 per person per month, with a £500 share of the deposit each.
Pets allowed at the discretion of the tenants and the landlady.
Location & Transport
The house is just a 5-minute walk from the train station, with services running every two hours on the Gunnislake-Plymouth Tamar Valley line. The village has around 300 residents and is set on the Bere Peninsula in West Devon, where the rivers Tamar and Tavy meet, between Tavistock and Plymouth.
The nearest village, Bere Alston, is larger and has all the shops you might need; there are no shops in our village.
There is easy train connection to Bere Alston (5 minutes away), Plymouth St Budeaux or Dockyard (10 minutes away for £2.90-£3.50 return ticket) or the main station in Plymouth (18 minutes for £4.50 return). There is also a daily bus to Tavistock from Bere Ferrers, with more options from Bere Alston.
By car, Tavistock is about 15-20 minutes away, and Plymouth (Derriford) is 25-30 minutes, depending on traffic. The nearest supermarkets are in Tavistock (20 minutes) and Woolwell (30 minutes) by car. Please note: the area has narrow lanes, so you'll need to be comfortable driving on them – you may occasionally need to reverse to let larger vehicles pass.
Tenants & Shared Space
W. is a quiet man in his late 30s who enjoys reading, photography, film, history, nature walks, dancing, and travel. He studied at the Arts University Plymouth and currently works as a carer in Tavistock and the surrounding areas, mornings and evenings.
P. is a lively, quiet woman in her late 30s who enjoys the outdoors, exercise, films, travel, and applied anthropology. She works from her bedroom office as a team lead for a digital startup.
T. is a quiet man in his 40s who will be moving out in April due to a change of jobs. He works as a government consultant for local farmers and works from home.
Although the house is always kept tidy, we don't have a strict cleaning schedule or rota – the only rule is “clean as you go”, which helps us avoid large, regular cleanups. The major shared tasks are floor sweeping, bathroom cleaning, and lawn mowing as our garden is quite large (but if you prefer, you could hire someone local for around £50 every couple of months to cut the grass).
There's plenty of space for your kitchen items, and we can share pots, cutlery, glasses, etc. You'll also have a large fridge-freezer entirely to yourself.
The House & Garden
• Two double bedrooms
• One large shared bathroom
• Living room with a fireplace
• Open kitchen with 2 fridge-freezers and a small dining area
• Kitchen reading corner
• Large hallway with storage larder
• Loft with ladder access
• Garage for storage
• Private driveway for up to 3 cars
• Spacious back lawn with a fire pit and river views (feel free to grow your own veg or keep chickens, as previous tenants have done).
Local Activities & Lifestyle
Bere Ferrers offers several small clubs and activities, all within 5-10 min walking distance:
• Tennis and table tennis clubs
• Yoga and pilates classes
• Language courses (intermediate Spanish and French)
• Music group
• History group
• Art group
• Women's Institute
• Pub quiz nights and live music
• Quay for open-water swimming and paddling
• The area is also great for walking – with estuary, woodland, and countryside trails. The famous Tamara Coast to Coast Way hiking trail runs directly through the village.
There's also a sailing club in the neighbouring village of Weir Quay and further fitness classes in Bere Alston.
Availability
The room comes unfurnished and will be available from mid-April for long-term rental, preferably for a minimum of one year (new tenant checks cost our lovely landlady £500 each time).
The contract will be signed through GB Property Management & Lettings in Tavistock. Please apply soon, as background checks can take up to a month before you can move in.
Message us if you're interested or have any questions. Serious inquiries only, please.
