Description

We are looking for a new member in our housing co-op!
We are looking for a fifth person to live in our communal house share, that is also 1 house of 2 in a housing co-op. This means we manage the houses and have a commitment to radical social change. Each person is a member and has an equal say in decision-making. No member individually owns or makes profit from the co-op. Our rent pays the mortgage, loans and maintenance.
We have 14 members. Everyone needs to take an active role in meetings and takes on a role in the co-op.
So while the rent is relatively cheap, it also involves organising in a group of 14, taking responsibility for the co-op and around 5-12 hours a month of work commitment.
There’s lots to understand so we share an Info Pack about the co-op and members (this doc is not it).

About how we live:
-We’re Queer feminists, 3 Trans non-binary ppl + 1 cis woman. We are between 25- 43yrs.
-A very fluffy friendly cat lives here. She doesn’t like dogs or other cats.
-We have anti-capitalist and non-hierarchical values
-We share our thoughts & feelings with each other and there is mutual care & support
-We’re a veganish household with communal shops, food and shared meals
-We have a house meeting every 2 weeks
-We make time to hang out together by: having regular house socials where we catch up and watch films/play board games; doing creative stuff, DIY, dancing, political discussions, Trans Pride, giving each other haircuts, affectionate piss-taking & lots of baked goods.
-We have a weekly cleaning rota and monthly house/garden work days
-We don’t smoke indoors, we have a patio and sheltered area if you wanna smoke outside
-Some of us are sober so we don’t get drunk or use drugs at home
-Our house is a social hub and we like having partners and friends over for gatherings
-Our guest room is often used by visiting friends and we've hosted refugees in the past (which we plan to do again)
-We have food delivered and we equally share cost for food/household items and bills. (roughly £65 for bills per month and £50 for food)
-Rent is £430pm
-Most people are sleeping between 10pm & 10am, so we respectfully keep noise to a minimum during those hours

About you:
-You’re excited about living in a house with a sense of community
-You're excited about the idea of taking collective responsibility of a home, garden and wider co-op
-You're Queer or have spent a lot of time with Queer people.
-You are active in a form of community building or social change
-You are keen to cook weekly (for others) and share meals together
-You are sociable and enjoy deep chats
-You are able to express your feelings, needs and have uncomfortable conversations to resolve issues
-You believe that a house is for living in and accept that this means fun moments come with messiness (which doesn’t mean being dirty)
-You enjoy the idea of living in a social house and are up for hosting people, having dinners and events
-You have DIY and gardening skills

This house is probably not for you if:

The Room:

-It’s 7.8m2, a small double.
-We have some storage space in other parts of the house you can use too.

-It's on the quiet side of the house overlooking the garden and Wild Park.
-The room is currently pink and orange, you can repaint it if you like.
-It comes unfurnished.
-As it’s at the top of the house, up 2 flights of carpeted stairs - 22 stairs total
-No communal spaces on this floor.
-You share the floor with 1 other person. Soundproofing isn’t bad unless you have a loud voice, loud music or loud sex.

The House:

-This is a 1930’s semi detached 3 floor house in Moulsecoomb, Brighton, BN2
-It's on a street with buses in the day but not traffic.
-Close to Wild Park, Stanmer park and both unis
-It has a cozy feel with an open plan living room and kitchen which looks out to Wild Park and our patio and wild back garden (Great spot for your morning coffee!)
-On the 1st floor there’s a spare box room for storage and guests.

Access:
-It’s a 3 or 4 min walk from the 49 bus stop
-The house has 7 steps down from the pavement to the front door with a double steel tube handrail half way, single rail all the way. The steps can get pretty slippery in the rain.
-The house is lit with energy saving light bulbs, there are no fluorescent lights.
-The communal areas are busy with cooking / music / chat / films around 5-9pm and weekends, the rest of the time the house is quite quiet as we’re all often at work. Occasionally people work or study in the open plan kitchen/living room.
-The living room and kitchen room are on the ground floor.
-There’s a small toilet on the ground floor
-The bathroom is on the 1st floor up a flight of 14 carpeted stairs with a banister. There is a toilet, sink, bath and shower over the bath.
-From the 1st floor to the 2nd floor there are 15 carpeted stairs with a bannister.
-There are 5 steps out of the back door to the patio with a handrail, and 3 steps from the patio to the grassy area of the garden.
-There is free on-street parking outside, except during event days (we can get parking permits)
