Communal living on Lewes High Street

We're looking for a like minded person or couple to join us in our charming flatshare on Lewes High Street. Together with James who owns the property, we are part of a CIC and Coop working to create a more co-operative, affordable and sustainable way of living.

About us:
We are Linn and Matt, a married couple and sometimes colleagues who run a theatre company together. Linn, 36, is Swedish/Dutch and Matt, 34, is from Yorkshire. We are both actors, directors, theatremakers and acting teachers. We love nature, travel, food, meeting new people, discussing politics, reading, board games, making music, dancing and Lewes’ many excellent pubs.

How we want to live:
- We’re flexi-vegetarian, feminist and queer friendly. We eat dinner together and share cooking whenever we can.
- We want to create a sense of community and build a family feel rather than just existing under the same roof, whilst being respectful of everyone’s need to sometimes be a hermit!
- We split costs equally for food, household supplies and bills to make it as cheap and supportive as possible for everyone.
- We share responsibilities and raise any ideas/concerns at regular house meetings.
- We make time for regular hang outs and mutual activities.
- We want to host public artistic events, community meals and socials but also enjoy quiet alone time. If you have creative interests, hobbies or projects you’d like to try in the flat we’d love to hear about it. We even have a projector & screen for movie nights.
- We see living together communally as a way to be anti-capitalist.

The Flat
This is a large 2-bed, 2 bathroom flat across two floors, right on the high street above what will become the new home of the dangerously excellent cafe/bar Caccia & Tails.

The flat has personality with some wonderful quirky features and beautiful old beams. It has 2 communal areas: kitchen and a large living room. There's a large decking that we share with our downstairs neighbour Andy, with a view of Lewes castle and the pub next door (a great spot for morning coffee and barbecues!).

We have a bedroom and bathroom with a bath upstairs. You would have your own bedroom and downstairs bathroom with a shower. (We’d be happy to share bathrooms, but it’s nice to know each party can have their own when needed).

The room:
The room is on the bottom floor at the opposite end of the rest of the flat, offering privacy when you need it. It has a quirky hatch with a cat flap for when you want to sneak out onto the decking. It comes unfurnished but we’re happy to help you find what you need on freecycle and/or the many second hand shops of Lewes.

Cost:

The rent is £700. Bills come to around £206 per month for a couple (together, so around £103 each), or around £137 per month for an individual. Unfortunately the council tax is quite high but we’re looking into if we are eligible to have it reduced.
