We do not currently have a vacancy but do contact us to register your interest for the future. We tend to have a vacancy every 12 months or so. We'll check this inbox every couple of weeks in the meantime so don't worry if you don't hear from us straight away. The rent will be between £458 and £478 depending on which room is available. More info about the house below :)
We are a co-operative eco-house in Withington, Manchester. What is a co-operative house? These are the basics:
We have no landlord in the traditional sense and we manage the house collectively. This means that, on top of rent and bills, we each volunteer some of our time to help run the house. For example, we arrange repairs (or carry them out ourselves if we have the skills), take care of finances and deal with all the legal aspects that come with running a house. We also have fortnightly meetings where we discuss these issues, agree on new purchases and so on. It's a bit more work than living in rented housing, but this way we get to live in a beautiful, low-energy house that we have full autonomy over (redecorating, gardening, all sorts!), and we only pay average rent for the area.
We also take it in turn to cook for the house, with each member cooking one meal a week (not everyone in the house is vegan, but all communal meals are), so you get a home cooked meal most evenings.
We have a lovely sunny back garden with space to relax, watch wildlife, and grow things, bike storage in the cellar and a workshop area.
We are looking for someone who likes the idea of what we do and really wants to join in. You don’t need any special skills, you just need to be willing to learn and value open communication. Most of us knew very little about running a co-op before we joined!
We're all very social and have occasional guests, but nothing too intense. The house is generally relaxed and pretty quiet. Of the five of us here currently we have a musician, an artist, a few academics and teachers. A couple of us are usually at home during the day.
There is no deposit as such, we try to meet people a couple of times first so they can decide if it is for them, and vice versa. Bills are on top of the rent and usually work out between £75 - £100 a month depending on the time of year. We are looking for someone who wants to stay at least 12 months, some of us have been here 5+ years.
If you are interested in living here, think you will fit in, are willing to learn new skills (or have some useful ones already), then get in touch! It's not your usual house share. Loads of benefits for a little extra commitment.
We're looking forward to hearing from you! Please let us know why you are interested in living in a co-operative and how you think you might contribute.
