Description
Oakfield Road Community is looking for a new long-term member (minimum 1 year+) to join our friendly, relaxed, and supportive home in Finsbury Park, North London.
Flexible move in date from the 1st September and 1st October.
We're a group of housemates who enjoy sharing delicious vegetarian meals, collaborating on house and garden maintenance and development, spending some social time together and supporting one another with personal and spiritual growth.
If you're looking for more than just a place to live, if you're drawn to connection, contribution interpersonal exploration then please read on to see if we might be a good fit.
🌻 About Our Community
We’re a quiet 5 person household built around mindful living with shared values of openness, cooperation, and creativity.
We don’t follow rigid rotas, things tend to flow organically. Most of us cook once or twice a week. We all contribute to a monthly shared food kitty and enjoy healthy delicious vegetarian food together.
Note: although the house is vegetarian, Equador cooks meat outside using an air fryer and has a small fridge for it in his room. Just a heads up if you're strictly vegetarian.
We strive to keep our shared spaces clean and welcoming, but we’re not ultra minimalist or spotless.
We hold regular fortnightly meetings (alternating between practical and social check ins).
We support each others personal and spiritual development and like to be playful and curious in the way we live side by side. We aim to handle any tensions with open hearted conversation and to find calm solutions together.
🌎 Neighbourly engagement
We’re also involved with our wider neighbourhood eg building a little free library and swap shelf at the front of the house. We believe that community isn’t just within our home it’s out there too.
✨ What We're Looking For
We’re seeking someone community minded, communicative and emotionally mature.
Someone who sees this as a home, not just a place to rent. We value:
✅ Sharing time together, communal meals, community projects, house cleaning, chats over tea and low key hangouts
✅ Cooking for the house roughly once or twice a week
✅ Attending house meetings (fortnightly)
✅ Willingness to participate in community house cleans, projects, offer input, and sometimes go with the flow
✅ An openness to building something bigger than ourselves
Experience in communal living or at least a serious curiosity is a big plus. Bonus points if you’re familiar with (or excited by) things like consensus-based decision-making, creativity, mental health, personal development, board games and movie nights.
Also, if you’re handy with spreadsheets that’s a double bonus!
🧡 Meet the Current Housemates
👨🔧 Michael (62): Our wise Irish-Buddhist plumber, ex-chef, and unofficial DIY guru. The longest standing member of the house and a grounding presence.
🎪 Equador (40): A full time entertainer specialising in bubbles and magic. Big on creativity, astral projection, supplements, and vibrant curiosities. Expect odd props, surprise experiments, and frequent home cinema vibes.
👩🍳 Frankie (26): Queer, charity worker + activist, loves running, cooking, going out dancing + making music / mixing tracks!
🧑🍳 Nina (33): Spanish chef passionate about cooking up new things. Loves sunshine, gigs, literature, and quality conversations.
The Location
We live in a charming ground floor/basement flat in a Victorian terrace just a 15 minute walk from both Finsbury Park and Crouch End. The nearest station is Harringay (1 stop north of Finsbury Park), and we’re around 30 minutes cycling from central London.
The Vibe:
•Calm, welcoming and accepting
•Early-to-bed house with quiet evenings
•Social and connected, but definitely not a party house
•Not super quiet in terms of noise (a lived-in old house), so awareness and respect around sound is important
The Living Space:
•Light filled kitchen stocked with every spice and tea imaginable, plus a Vitamix, water filter tap, washer & dryer
•Warm, cosy living/dining room with a massive 3m-wide projector screen often used for co-working, shared dinners, and chilled hangouts
• 2 bath/shower rooms – a main bathroom and an ensuite shower room (non-exclusive thus occasional access by rest of community needs to be agreed)
•The garden is long and lush with a sunny balcony that catches the morning light. We’ve had more luck growing herbs than veg, but we love sitting out with tea, harvesting mint, or chatting as the bumblebees go by.
•No smoking indoors (one member smokes occasionally on the balcony)
•Unfortunately, no pets allowed (landlord policy)
Heating:
The house is older and not the warmest, so we tend to layer up and make good use of hot water bottles. We do run an oil-filled radiator in the lounge and sometimes the central heating, but if you thrive in a toasty, highly insulated environment, this might not be your perfect fit.
(Please mention “bumblebees” in the first few lines of your message so we know you’ve read the full ad!)
The Room:
•The nicest room in the house
•Spacious, with built-in wardrobes, ensuite toilet & shower, new carpet
•Sound can carry from adjacent rooms, but we’re mindful and keep volumes low
💸 Costs & Practical Details
•Available from ~August 1st, depending on when our current housemate actually moves. She has had a personal crisis so it’s a bit up in the air.
•Rent: £631.80/month
•Bills: ~£100/month (includes all utilities)
•Food kitty: £70/month for shared groceries
•Deposit: 1 month’s rent (protected)
Rent will likely rise slightly (~£60ish) in July 2026.
. 📝 How to Apply
If this sounds like a potential fit, please message us through spareroom and include:
•A bit about yourself eg your interests/passions, work, age and what drew you to our community
•Your experience with communal or intentional living
•What you’re seeking in a home/housemates
• What you think you can bring to a community or our community in particular.
•A picture of yourself is helpful but not essential
•Any dietary restrictions or allergies we should know about
Please take our application process seriously. Whilst there are many benefits to living in a community, it also requires some greater commitment than living in a shared house – See above ’ What we are looking for’. Please consider this level of involvement expected before applying.
👋 The Process
1. We’ll read through your application and shortlist potential housemates
2. We may invite you to meet us in person
3. If there’s a good vibe, we’ll invite you round for dinner!
If we all feel it's a good fit, you'll be welcomed in with a 6-month integration period. After that, if it’s going well on both sides, you’ll transition to a 6-month rolling agreement with 2 months’ notice required to leave.
We’re looking forward to meeting someone who’s excited to co-create a peaceful, playful, and purposeful communal home with us.
