Description
Hey all,
I’ve got a room available soon on my boat in South Dock Marina. The room is a loft extension I built myself, it’s a very weird room but also very cosy! It’s the most insulated part of the boat so warm over the winter, consists of the main room below and loft extension above where there’s a double bed - see pics for more info, it’s a bit tricky to describe!
The boat is a Dutch barge called Jonge Geertje, and I (Jack) live here with my friend George. I work at the RA & George is studying for a PHD, we’re both early 30s, and there’s also my cat Lyra who is possibly also in her early 30s, no one knows for sure.
The boat is generally very cosy, although there is usually always something to fix, next big project is the bathroom which is currently fine but completely mad. I can pretty much handle everything (so no long waits for your landlord to fix things as it is literally also a problem for me) but if there are any very DIY eager people out there then you’d definitely find something to do.
We have a shower / bath, washer and dryer, dish washer and shared living room / kitchen, as well as a large roof decking with great views of the marina.
South Dock itself is a gated community full of very lovely people, it’s a real neighbourhood where you actually get to know the people who live on your street / pontoon.
Rent is £700 per month and bills are £108, which includes council tax (band A), water, wifi, gas and electric. We also tend to buy a big load of smokeless logs to burn in our woodburner during the winter, and that tends to be a one-off spend of around £150 each - definitely worth it though as nothing nicer than a fire going when the water outside is frozen solid!
Boat living isn’t for everyone as it does take a bit of getting used to, so would probably suit someone a little adventurous who isn’t afraid to pitch in with the odd bit of nautical such and such. Unfortunately I can’t recommend that it’s a very good place to live if you have limited mobility, as we have lots of quite steep staircases that are tricky to navigate even for Lyra! (And she’s a cat). We’re looking for someone to move in ideally on the 1st December, but can be flexible from mid-November to mid-December. Hope to hear from you!
