This Homeshare opportunity is advertised by Homeshare Oxfordshire, a service of Age UK Oxfordshire, on behalf of the Householder(s). A Homeshare arrangement offers low cost accommodation in the home of an older person, or couple, in exchange for an agreed amount, typically 10 hours a week, of companionship and help around the home.

We are looking for a kind, friendly and relaxed person to join a kind-natured, understanding and patient Householder in his East Oxford home, a 10-minute cycle ride to central Oxford.

Prior to moving to Oxford in 2009 to be closer to family, the Householder worked in garden centres for many years and volunteered in local parish church activities and in the Scouts. He cycled everywhere and enjoyed sport and music and theatre. Soon after moving to Oxford, he was diagnosed as having Bardet Biedl syndrome, which causes blindness amongst other things. He is registered SSI (Severely Sight Impaired) and moves slowly.

The Householder enjoys listening to Radio 3 & 4, and Radio Oxford. He is interested in current affairs and follows cricket, rugby, snooker, tennis, cookery and gardening programmes on TV. He enjoys company and likes chatting but does need time to process new ideas and may respond slowly to questions. He has a good sense of humour. Friends and learning about people have always been important to him.

Well supported by a lovely care team, a carer comes each morning to prepare breakfast and meals for the rest of the day. Local volunteers come twice a week to accompany the Householder on short local walks and very supportive family live close by. The Householder really appreciates having someone else living in the house, which helps him to feel safe. His current Homesharer is imminently relocating and the Householder is looking forward to welcoming a new person into his home and to a forming a new friendship.

The key requirement of the arrangement would be a little shared company and time together each day, most likely early evening, but the timing is flexible. Reading a book to the Householder, who can no longer see to read, would be great. Someone clean and tidy who would help to keep things clean and orderly would also be appreciated. The Sharer would ideally have a couple of hours free on a Thursday morning to accompany the Householder on a local Health Walk and would be able to take him to the local Church every other Sunday.

This Homeshare would suit someone who might share some of the Householder’s interests and who could help in the ways outlined above, at a steady and kind pace. Someone who enjoys spending a fair bit of time at home and who may even work from home some days, could work well. A car driver, to help with occasional lifts, would be a bonus. The house is spacious, warm and bright.
