Description

We are looking for a new housemate to join our housing co-op.

Please make sure you know or have read a bit about what a housing co-op is before applying - this isn’t a straightforward house share. We are very happy to talk more and answer questions about housing co-ops if we invite you round to see the house, but for now we just want to make sure that applicants have an understanding of what they are applying to.

Here is a basic definition:

A housing co-op is similar to a housing association, but it’s managed by its tenants. It’s a group of people who have control over their own housing, without actually owning it personally.

In our housing co-op, members tend to live communally (for example, we buy food as a house, take it in turns to cook and eat together when we can) and we each have a responsibility to contribute to the running of the co-op. We have a secretary, a treasurer, a maintenance person and a food person. We have meetings to make decisions about how we run the house.

This room is available in a six bedroom house with lots of communal space, solar hot-water, a small garden, decent amounts of bike parking and lots of things going on. Close to Machynlleth town centre and train station. Rent is around £295/month, including all bills and lots of vegetarian communal food. We are three women and one man, all in our twenties-thirties.

The kitchen is vegetarian/vegan and we don't smoke or vape inside. Couples are welcome to apply. We aren't open to short term housemates, but rather we want someone who is up for staying around for a while and getting involved in the co-op.

When choosing a new co-op member we will take all of these points into account:

How well we think they would fit in the House and Coop;
How aligned they are with Cooperative Principles, including their commitment to work sharing, as laid out in our Primary Rules and Tenancy Agreement;
How significant their need for housing is;
Any barriers the person may face in accessing housing elsewhere, due to discrimination because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, race, class, ability etc.
