Description

Room on a Thames Houseboat — Looking for a Friendly, Creative Housemate 🚢🐈

Living on a houseboat on the Thames is already a fairly unusual proposition, so I'm hoping to find someone who sees this and thinks: yes, absolutely.

I have a room available in the lower flat of a genuinely brilliant houseboat, and I'd love to find someone who wants to make it feel properly like home rather than simply fill a bedroom.

It's a pretty unique opportunity to live on the river in London. The boat has bags of character and, wonderfully, when the tide is out there's a sandy Thames beach literally outside the front door. You can step off the boat and onto the riverbank — which is one of those slightly ridiculous London things that I don't think will ever stop being cool.

And then there are the other residents: Ghostbuster, Clover and Antoinette — my three cats, who very much consider the boat theirs. 🐈🐈🐈

So liking cats is fairly essential. They have strong opinions about this.

THE BOAT & THE BIGGER PICTURE

The room advertised here is part of the lower flat, and that's the home I'm looking for someone to share with me.

There is also a separate upper flat on the same boat which is currently being advertised. That flat isn't mine to offer or fill, and anything involving the upstairs would be an entirely separate consideration, conversation and agreement with the person responsible for it.

But it does create a rather lovely possibility.

If the right people happen to move into both parts of the boat, we could potentially end up with a little community spanning the whole vessel — separate homes and agreements, but friendly neighbours sharing this wonderfully strange place on the Thames.

I'd love to get a bunch of good people aboard who actually know one another: cooking together occasionally, having friends round, sitting outside when the weather behaves, wandering down onto the beach, sharing a drink or a cup of tea and generally making the boat somewhere people are happy to come home to.

Not some enormous forced commune. Not a permanent party house. And definitely no expectation that everyone lives in each other's pockets.

Just a really good home with really good people in it.

I think that could be rather special.

ABOUT ME

I'm Ed, 29, and I work around theatre, immersive experiences and the arts. I'm creative, sociable and curious, and I'm generally happiest living somewhere with a bit of character and life to it.

I'm into immersive theatre, art and design, museums, history, philosophy, psychology, board games, cooking, music, writing, exploring London, animals, community and a good long conversation about something completely unexpected.

I like having friends over and I love the idea of a household where people can actually become friends rather than just passing one another in the corridor.

Equally, I value having my own space and completely respect other people's. Sometimes you want dinner and conversation; sometimes you want to disappear into your room and emerge tomorrow. Both are good.

WHO MIGHT LOVE IT HERE?

You definitely don't need to work in the arts.

I suspect this place will particularly appeal to someone creative, theatrical, musical, freelance, queer-friendly, community-minded or simply someone who looks at the words "I could live on a houseboat on the Thames" and gets excited rather than alarmed.

The important things are being friendly, considerate, communicative and interested in helping make the place a genuinely good home.

This isn't intended to become a silent collection of bedrooms, but it isn't a party house either.

Somewhere in the lovely middle would be ideal.

THE PRACTICAL BIT

Deposit: £1,400. There may be some flexibility depending on individual circumstances, so I'm happy to have a conversation about this.

The upper flat is advertised separately and isn't included in the room or price advertised here.

INTERESTED?

Send me a message telling me a little about yourself — what you do, what your normal week looks like, what you're looking for in a home and, most importantly:

Why does living on a houseboat appeal to you?

If you're looking at the pictures thinking I cannot believe I could actually live there, we're probably starting from the right place.

Come and have a look. 🚢🌊🐈

Viewing times between 10am and 8pm most days

Message us with a bit about you and when you can pop round for a cup of tea and a tour!

Best,

Ed
