We have one room available from mid August in a six bedroom house with lots of communal space, a garden with a covered area, a cinema room, solar hot-water, fibre broadband, and bike parking. We are close to Machynlleth town centre and the train station. Rent is £385/month (£210 for the the room, £175 for bills and communal food including a weekly veg box and bulk food orders of staples).
A housing coop is similar to a housing association, but it’s managed by its tenants. It’s a group of people who have control over their own housing. In our housing coop members live communally (for example, we bulk buy some food items as a house and take it in turns to cook and eat together when we can). We each have a responsibility to contribute to the running of the coop. We have a secretary, a treasurer, a maintenance coordinator, and a food coordinator, and we have meetings to make decisions about how we run things.
Bear in mind that this is more than a house share. We are very happy to talk and answer questions about housing coops if we invite you round to see the house, but for now we just want to make sure that applicants have an understanding of what they are applying for. We have more information available on our website, which you can find by Googling "Machynlleth Housing Cooperative" or we can forward it to you if you pop us a message requesting more information. (SpareRoom doesn't let us post links here.)
Communal meals are vegetarian/vegan but housemates are welcome to prepare non-vegetarian food for themselves in the kitchen. We don't smoke inside but there is a small garden with a covered area. Couples are welcome to apply. We aren't open to short-term housemates, and we prefer someone who is up for staying around for a while and getting involved in the coop.
When choosing a new coop member, we take the following into account:
- How well we think you would fit in the house and coop;
- How aligned you are with cooperative principles, including your commitment to work sharing;
- How significant your need for housing is;
- Any barriers you may face in accessing housing elsewhere, due to discrimination because of your sexual orientation, gender identity, race, class, ability etc.
To apply please get in contact and we can forward you a link to further information and our application form. (SpareRoom doesn't let us share a link in this ad.)
